For many, the end of summer is the most depressing time of the year.
Not for fashion enthusiasts though. Because the end of summer coincides with the most exciting month for fashion, September. New collections flood the stores, September issues and blogs are filled to the brim with trend reports and fresh editorials and of course, Fashion Month kicks off, so it's safe to say that ispiration isn't running thin.
This is probably one of my favorite posts to make, because trend reports have this old-school feel to them that takes me back to my childhood, when I was skimming through my mother's magazines, marvelling at all the runway shots, memorizing designer and model names, absorbing it all in. There was a time in fashion where trend reports, especially the September ones were everything, the most important piece of the year. So, in respect of this tradition, I present you with all my favorite trends from my favorite collections with a short analysis for each one.
Throughout the collections, I think there's one element that jumps out the most: power. The new styles exude confidence, authority and self determination. Boxy shoulders, sexy boots, maxi coats, suits and bold color are defining a new fashion era with plenty of retro references that range from the 60s to the 90s and the early 00s.
Now let's examinate each trend one-by-one:
If there is one item that you will keep seeing everywhere this season then that's the mannish blazer. Whether matched to a hot mini skirt for a more playful look or a sleek pair of pants for the perfect office chic, it's that one piece you will have to invest in. An item like that can never really go out of fashion and if you've never taken the plunge before then now is the time to do it.
Color blocking was a huge trend some time ago and slowly faded away in favor of more neutral palettes. But now it's back and at full force. Pink and red are probably the most popular combo du moment but even more unlikely choices can seem sophisticated and edgy if the right materials and cuts are chosen. If this amount of color seems intimidating, color block with accessories and keep the main core of your outfit more minimal.
Velvet was already a big trend last year and it's still strong this Fall. Pair this lush fabric with a plunging neckline and soft silhouettes for maximum impact. If you're still unsure but want to dip your toe in the trend, opt for a pair of velvet kitten heel pumps or 70s platform sandals.
This is probably the toughest one to pull off and it's not for the faint-hearted. Head-to-toe print can feel overwhelming, but when it's good it earns the wearer extra style points. When it comes to choosing a print, soft florals are the safest bet.
Another daring look which has been gaining territory over the past months is head-to-toe red. And even if red on red on red can be too punchy for most, at least choose one stand out fiery piece this season, even if it's a coat or a pair of sock boots or cable knit sweater.
Just like the blazer, the coat is yet another key piece that can become a staple that will prove its worth even when the trend runs its course. A sophisticated cut that grazes the calf will immediately update your winter look and breathe new life into your already existing wardrobe. So even if you buy only one thing this season make it the outerwear piece.
Stay tuned for the next one!
