Spring 2014 Review: PFW: Hits & Misses

Oh la la! Paris, the fashion capital of the romantics hosted another quite long fashion week and had a lot of surprises coming. Marc Jacobs presented his last and rather impressive collection for the house of Louis Vuitton. Raf Simons presented another collection that got people raving or hatin'. So did Stella McCartney. Now, as the season wraps, the trends really start to read and fashion readers worldwide will brace themselves for the trend reports and editorials that are coming like a storm. 

I know I didn't recap Milan fashion week but it was really overwhelming to keep up with everything so I decided to do a well-rounded review on Paris fashion week instead.

Paris is like a European dream. I've never been there which is quite unfortunate since I studied french for a long time and just finished last year, so french culture is something that I'm proud to say I'm familiar with. La parisienne is a lady that is chic, elegant, romantic, loves to walk by La Seine and eat macarons at La Duree but most of all she's refined in a simple way. Paris isn't about the fuss. Paris is about grace.

Let's take a look at my personal faves and what I consider to be misses:

THE GOOD:

Chanel

 

What is a Paris fashion week or Paris in the first place, without some Chanel? Perhaps the most distinctive french brand. Lagerfeld wowed the crowds again with this beautiful and inspired collection. Black and white held strong once again, so did tweed, but it was quite nice to see some multicolored garments featuring all the colors of the prism. In the picture above, you can see a pretty B&W dress with lace all over the belly area which I found to be a nice touch to a rather classic frock.

Best of Spring/Summer Must-Haves

I was browsing through net-a-porter the other day, and I found some real MASTERPIECES! It's amazing what you can find there! So, I gathered some top favorites and I present them to you right here and so you can pick your own favorite:

> I adore its lime green color, it so catchy and very impressive. I love everything Matthew Williamson.

>I'm obsessed with yellow this season and this clutch with the chain is completing every fashionista's look. ;)

>Necklaces are major and one like this one can combine versatility and glam all day long.

>Okay, well this playsuit it the BIGGEST must-have for me the beading is fabulous but it doesn't make it any less casual and cool.

>Valentino is well known for its pure elegance and romantic shapes. This embroidered dress embraces flatteringly the female figure and it shows it off.

>Fashion nowadays is all about being unusual and trying different things. With the availability of style in these days, it is very hard to stand out since anyone can look stylish. It's all about experimenting and trying out new things.



Donna Karan silk-chiffon handkerchief dress
>Airy fabrics have the magic combo of glam-comfort. I love that thing about them. Clothes aren't supposed to make you feel 'prisoned' in them, they're supposed to make you feel nice.



Valentino glam stones frame clutch
>Now that's a true masterpiece.

>Florals are always current at summer. Thakoon makes the very best of them.

>Vintage patterns take a more modern edge thanks to the flashy color.

Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear : Valentino

The fanfare of their first haute couture outing behind them, the new Valentino designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, presented their ready-to-wear collection today, and while the label's retired founder wasn't visibly cheering from the sidelines as he was in January, his spirit was certainly present. As former accessories designers under Mr. Valentino, the incumbent duo are keenly aware of the house codes, and today they adhered rather dutifully to the ladylike sensibility for which these clothes have always been known.

Elaborating on several of the ideas they presented in their sixties-inflected couture collection, Chiuri and Piccioli showed sleeveless sheaths and coats with fan pleating below the ribs, some accented with a jeweled brooch. There were evening coats with gradated crystal beading, deep fox-fur cuffs and hems replacing couture's feathers. Cocktail dresses and gowns, meanwhile, featured draped and shirred bodices, but despite bold colors like emerald, golden yellow, and turquoise, they erred on the staid side. The same goes for those camel and bordeaux cape-backed lunch suits. A long leopard-spot cape with a wide band of fur at the hem had a younger feel.

Overall, capturing the youth vote with this collection will prove a challenge. Mr. Valentino, of course, was popular with ladies of a certain age, but he always was—and continues to be—quite tapped in with the fabulous crowd. In order to move the label forward as the new designers' mandate requires, a little less reverence for the past and a little more attention to what the palazzo set is wearing now will be in order.
