Holiday Post #3: Celebrity-inspired Partywear

Hello lovely readers,

How are you? There are only 15 days left 'till Christmas! Whaaaa!!! Time has really flown by, I can't believe we're already almost halfway through December. It feels like yesterday when I was making all these posts about Fall and we were talking about our favorite pumpkin spice-scented things.

Trend breakdown: Mixed Prints

As I was looking through random Olivia Palermo outfits on pinterest (check out my pinterest account here) trying to break down what on earth this woman does to achieve this level of put-together-ness in such an effortless way, I noticed that she's the QUEEN of mixed prints. And then it occured to me that the most unique outfits are the ones that comprise of the most unlikely combos.

At first this trend kinda scared me and I was hesitant to go for it as I thought that you need to acquire some insane styling skills to get it right. But as it turns out, it's not rocket science. People can tell you a hundred different rules about styling and mixing and matching but to be honest success lies in experimentation. No one ever became a trendsetter by following the rules. Trendsetting is about setting the trend, right?

So instead of a do-this-not-that type of post, I'm just going to demonstrate a few different ways you can wear this trend but remember: just be creative - when it comes to it, no rules really apply! Go with your gut.

COLOR- COORDINATED

Kate Hudson

My favorite way to wear this trend is by staying within the same palette. You pick out an item - either top or bottom piece - and see what other printed item you can pair it with that includes similar colors. Does that make sense? The blue palette is one of my favorites: perfect for summer, flattering on most skin tones and hard to go wrong with because the colors are wearable (let's say an outfit based on green mixed prints could go bananas quite easily - but hey don't let that dissuade you from trying it anyway!).

The Ultimate Guide To Celebrity Style

How many times have you skimmed through magazine pages and scoured the web in order to unlock the secrets to celeb-like fashion sense? I've always been infatuated with celebrities and their sense of style, whether that is innate or the product of a stylist's work. I used to follow various "get the celebrity look" websites like a maniac and I was always out to see what my favorite style stars would wear next. I still love to watch shows like Fashion Police and I'm the first to check out red carpet shots in order to spot the 'hits and misses'.
However, over the years, I learned, not how to copy their style, but how to draw inspiration from it only to incorporate it gracefully into my own personal sense of style. Just because I like a certain way of dressing on someone doesn't mean it'd look good on me. I also came to the realization that a lot of the things that celebrities wear are not practical because they're not your 9 to 5 kind of apparel. Celebs often wear things because they will be seen and photographed, because they wanna advertise something and because they need to uphold a certain status. Everyone knows it's highly unrealistic to walk around while shopping in 5 inch heels but celebrities do it all the time because it's their job to look uncommon and unattainable.
Younger stars though do tend to look a lot more approachable style-wise because usually that's the kind of profile they want to promote: the down-to-earth girl-next-door that teens can relate to. Their managers and stylists want them to wear things that the everyday gal can afford and wear without hesitation.
It's not rocket science really: just like normal people, celebrities too fall into style categories but that doesn't mean they're not allowed to deviate and explore different styles every now and then. But their flamboyant personalities, (sometimes) bright talent and of course, the teams of image experts that surround them make everything they put on seem more fab. Let's take a few notes.
(note that most of the pictures are candid streetstyle photos for the sake of making this post more relatable, because there wouldn't be much of a point in discussing about red carpet gowns that obviously most of us cannot wear)

THE VINTAGE CUTIE-PIES

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

(click on the arrows on the sides to see more)

These gals look like they've escaped from a pin-up poster but at the same time don't look that unworldly kind of perfect. They're fun and even quirky sometimes in their comfy ballerina flats and easy breezy floral dresses. They make sure they don't miss out on the fun, they love color, patterns and all things sweet: bows, polka-dots, cats, floral prints, pearls, curls. They will always stay loyal to their personal sense of style and hesitate to try the more fashion-forward trends. They will also hold on to red lipstick religiously.

THE GLAMS

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

Those glam girls are the absolute Hollywood starlets. They love everything that shines, lush fabrics, extravaganza, large shades, heavy makeup, fake tanning. They really go for it. All of it. They don't hold back on the glitz and the glam. Their skin glows and their hair is long and shiny. They strut flawlessly in stilettos from day to night, often wearing big floppy hats, looking away from the paps and holding close their 2,000$ purse. They party hard and travel in their private jets while popping champagne bottles and Instagram all of it along the way.

THE ROCKERS

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

These are the "don't give a f-" kind of girls. They don't have a care in the world. They do black a lot - like, a lot. They know how to wear the "I didn't even try" look right. They are rebellious and don't care about always looking put together and pretty. In fact most of the time they don't. They barely wear any makeup, usually go for pants and basically aim for comfort. Boots are absolutely necessary for this kind of look. They love bands' t-shirts, ripped denim, Ray-bans, leather, sneakers, backpacks, rings, awkward poses and also some more leather (did I mention leather?).

THE EDGIES

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

These ones are fierce women that are set to push the boundaries. They are repelled by anything common and ordinary and crave excitement and challenges. They don't wanna be accused of being boring because they don't feel like it. They're gifted, bright people who wanna celebrate their originality. Or, sometimes they just wanna grab attention. They love colors, volume, unrealistically high heels, crazy patterns, cartoon-like shapes and drama. They also change their mind like a girl changes clothes (pun intended, yeah).

THE CLASSIES

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

That's my favorite category and if I ever was a celebrity that's the one I'd probably fall into (hehe). These ladies are the absolute fashionistas. They are chic and always put together even if they wear skinny jeans with a simple sweater. They got elegance running in their veins. They're royalty even in their simplest outfit. When you ask them who their favorite designer is, they won't reply you with a predictable answer like "Gucci", they're probably gonna tell you something like Altuzarra or Jason Wu or Proenza Schouler. They're cool and hip and urban and they love New York, culture, gourmet food and travelling to unlikely destinations. They always wanna be in the know and they wanna live a fabulous lifestyle that consists of high quality and exceptional taste in everything they do.

THE LAID-BACK COOLS

STYLE BREAKDOWN: KEY PIECES

That's my second to favorite category. Girls like them are the California dream. They sport everything with ease and always look for comfort and style at the same time. They're modern and they just wanna have fun. They love the sunshine, denim shorts, scarves, boots and Isabel Marant. They're those cool LA girls that drive their convertibles down Santa Monica boulevard and live their lives either on the beach or shopping in Hollywood. Two things are for sure: they know how to have  a good time and they look the part too.

Golden Globes 2014 Red Carpet: Best & Worst Dressed list

I'm usually not the one to do a full best/worst dressed list but looking through the red carpet shots at the Golden Globes I felt compelled to.

But before we get deep into discussing hem lengths and shoe choices, I wanna express how overjoyed I feel that my favorite actress won Best Supporting Role in a Comedy (Jennifer Lawrence) and that one of my favorite films for the year that's passed, "American Hustle", won best Comedy/Musical. Very pleased also that Leo DiCaprio won a Golden Globe. The guy deserves all the awards. (Still waiting for that Oscar, though.)

First, let's start with the bad:

THE BAD:

Julia Roberts

 photo 155_2185_350_zpsf897478c.jpg

A definitive what-was-she-thinking moment. Her figure is smokin', don't get me wrong. But why is she looking so secretary-ish? The dress would be so much better without that white shirt. It wouldn't be a head-turner for sure, but at least she wouldn't end up on a worst-dressed list.

Edie Falco

  photo 462133497_zpsc0d97802.jpg

I really don't know where to start. There are just too many things that are wrong with this gown. The color is god-awful. The bow at the top makes her look like a very belated Christmas gift. The shiny fabric looks rather cheap -which oddly enough is probably not- and the shape isn't doing anything good for her body. Just bad, bad, bad all together.

Paula Patton

 photo 155_2161_350_zps5c65bfa5.jpg

Definitely not THE worst look of the evening, but for me it was a no. The huge ruffles look unflattering and kinda messy. The hem length is also a little bit off-putting. Maybe I would have like this dress better as a shorter one. There is also something about maxi-dresses and platform shoes showing underneath that makes me very uneasy. Not her best moment.

and now THE WORST:

Lena Dunham

 photo 462081047_10_zps1606f8ad.jpg

I'm so sorry, I just can't get over how bad this is! To be honest, Imma be a little mean, but I can't recall one time I saw this girl wear something that actually looks decent. The canary color is too cartoon-y for my taste and the shape of the dress makes her look like a sausage. I have nothing against more voluminous girls but this dress won't enhance those nice curves. It's not feminine or pretty or classy.

and now enough with the bad-mouthing, it's time for our eyes to rest

the GOOD:

Michelle Dockery

 photo 155_2096_350_zps0ead4464.jpg

This woman is so classy and this look is a real winner. It is true, I have a soft spot for anything Oscar De La Renta but this gown is just so beautiful, so flawless it could make even the hardest of hearts shed a tear. The color is exceptional for her skin tone, the shoes are a perfect match, the makeup is classy, simple and radiant. Maybe the girls from the list above wanna take some notes.

Jennifer Lawrence

  photo 462094587_zps388b2b02.jpg

My girl! I love her enormously (but please, don't think I am biased in any way when I praise this look) and I am so thrilled she won -I mean, they'd be fools not to award her- and I'd love to crown her as THE best dressed celebrity of the evening but I have saved that title for another lady (I'm pretty sure Jen won't mind!). She looks gorgeous in that b&w Christian Dior Haute Couture gown, which was a rather bold choice that she definitely pulled off just fine. Trust me, this could've looked very wrong on someone else, but Jen just has that extra spice that makes everything better! There is something retro and romantic about this look but at the same time it's very fresh and fashion-forward. Talk about the perfect balance! (Can I also add that the accessorizing is flawless?)

Margot Robbie

 photo 462073325_10_zps1641a836.jpg
Is this the new Scarlett? I saw this girl first in "About Time" (lovely movie, check it out) and despite her bitchy character the one thing I noticed right away was how stunning she was. She looks uber-classy in that beautiful cream-colored gown with just the right amount of sexy. The color compliments her complexion and her makeup is divine. Greek goddess at her best.

Taissa Farmiga

 photo 155_2134_350_zpsb1f7f9d8.jpg
Young actress Taissa Farmiga looked so fresh and beautiful in this lacy white dress the way only a 20 year old could. Perfect choice for her and it was nice to see someone deviate from the typical princess-y red carpet floor-length gown.

Olivia Wilde

 photo 462094119_10_zpsfa955d9e.jpg

Olivia Wilde was sparkling all over, as that pregnancy glow makes her look all the more radiant. She was a sweetie in that emerald sequin Gucci dress which looked phenomenal against her skin tone and ombre locks. Definitely a look that made me smile.

and now, the BEST:

Cate Blanchett

  photo 155_2157_350_zpsa6d38078.jpg

One more award for Cate's resume and very deservedly so. She was amazing in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" but Cate ain't looking blue at all in this stunning black lace gown! She looks as classy and as elegant as ever. The sheerness of the fabric adds just the right amount of drama but without taking it too far and the accessorizing is spot-on. Beautiful, daring but age-appropriate and fitting too.

That's it, readers!
Our fashion recap is over!
(Actually, I could go on and on and on but ain't nobody got time for that so... there you have it!)

Get the Look: Sarah Jessica Parker, Olivia Palermo and Serena Van Der Woodsen

I know I'm always all about "how we shouldn't copy other people's style", but some women are true inspiration to me and I really enjoy making these kind of sets on Polyvore so why not share it with you? These 3 style queens have a very distinct sense of style which I admire. Sarah Jessica Parker (Check out the SJP tribute post here:http://fashionistalooks.blogspot.com/2010/05/style-inspiration-sarah-jessica-parker.html) : Oh my god, what should I say? She and Carrie are so alike. She makes it hard to tell the one from the other! Olivia Palermo (Check out the Olivia tribute post here: http://fashionistalooks.blogspot.com/2010/04/style-inspiration-olivia-palermo.html: I think her style is flawless, and what's most impressive, is that she has established her own style without any stylist's interference and last but not least, Serena Van Der Woodsen: Ok, I know the styling genius behind her is Eric Daman, but I should give her credit for her glorious body, which makes everything that she wears look good.

So Yesterday

Oh well, well. Since you like the whole "my philosophy" kind of post, I decided to make another one. "Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger" like GaGa says :P Well, I've been watching all the Fall '10 collections these days 'cause I wanna do some trend reports for winter soon, and I noticed one thing. No over-knee boots this year. The whole last year's 'over-knee' frenzy ended just like that and I really don't like to whine about those things, but these trends that come and go kind of piss me off. What yesterday was a "must-have", today is a "not anymore". And all this stuff you bought last year in the trend craziness now is garbage. And with the whole financial crisis and everything, we're not particularly able to spend our money everywhere on things that last for only one season.

So I made up this rule. Don't ever fall for the 'huge' trends that the magazines praise and everybody goes crazy about. When you see that something is worn by everybody and seen everywhere it only means that it's another trend that will be over as soon as the season's over. Besides, what really makes the difference (and what makes fashion in the first place), is wearing things that other people don't.

A true style icon isn't somebody who just wears what the magazines say he should. A true style icon doesn't have should's, have-to's and -the so-called - 'must-haves'. I true style icon is a trendsetter. And by definition that means: someone who sets a trend, not someone who wears the trend that someone else set. So, really, all these Hollywood stars who all of sudden, out of nowhere become "style icons" overnight just because they hired a decent stylist, are just a lie. Very few are these who truly have an eye for fashion. And those are the stars who don't fake anything, who don't pretend to be something, and who don't act like the whole world revolves around them.

Okay, so I might changed the subject a bit, but my point stays the same. Don't wear just what you're told to, 'cause that's just not what's gonna make you special. Wear what you like, what makes you feel comfortable and what YOU think suits you best. Don't follow blindly someone else's style, establish yours.
